Nowhere in the New Testament does it say that a Christian leader, because of title or position, has moral authority over another Christian. Pagans will seek offices that grant them power and authority in order to exert their leadership (lordship) over others. Jesus said that His people were not to seek to rule over others, but to serve others selflessly and love others unconditionally. When a church or home gives in to Fraudulent Authority, the people of Christ become more pagan in practice than Christian. Fraudulent Authority teaches you how to recognize this dangerous practice of Christians seeking to exert power and authority over people in evangelical churches and homes and what you can do about it.
Fraudulent Authority Pastors Who Seek to Rule Over Others Wade Burleson Books
I have been intrigued by how many churches there are that are abandoning congregational forms of government and placing all authority over church life into the hands of few individuals. This practice is particularly perplexing in two kinds of congregations: those that have been congregational (Baptist) in the past and those that are upstart non-denominational congregations. In the former, congregations are abandoning their historical roots for a system that empowers a very few. In the latter, the few that are empowered have no denominational over-sight to keep them in check. One of the great travesties of these systems is that frequently those in power require membership contracts of their congregations that place certain leaders in authority over others. Wade takes these issues on from a Biblical perspective and shows how we are all equal at the foot of the cross.Product details

Fraudulent Authority Pastors Who Seek to Rule Over Others Wade Burleson Books Reviews
Jesus Christ is our ruler, none other. That is the premise of this book. It is eye opening to many of the practices and normalized traditions that are not scriptural but entrenched in our congregations. I have felt out of place for disagreeing with things like tithing pledges, restrictions on communion and prepackaged, non spirit-inspired, sermons. This book has made me realize the guilt pressed on congregations by pastors is not spirit led. I found myself saying "wow, that is exactly what my church does" frequently. This book will foster the spirit inside you and make you despise religious leaders who abuse the trust people have in the Lord. I wish every Christian would read this this.
Wade did an outstanding job explaining the source and definition of Spiritual Authority and how the "Institutional Church " has replaced it with Man-Made Authority. The book is thorough and it uses extensive portions of scripture to explain the misunderstanding and misconceptions that we have believed for so long.. The book is eye-opening and it helps us articulate very well ideas that we may have but do not know how to share. Being that Wade is a Pastor I appreciate even more his sincerity and clarity on the topic... He out of all people would have a vested interest in not clarifying this topic.....
The language and tone of the book is respectful but you can definitely sense a level of frustration (VERY WELL FOUNDED)....
I highly recommend this book for all in leadership but also the whole Body of Christ.
I was surprised to find out that a Baptist wrote this book! I could tell that the Holy Spirit has been at work, and I am very grateful for this. I wish I could have read this information years ago because it explains Biblical authority well. This book caused me to get out my Hebrew and Greek dictionary, and I will be doing this much more henceforth. I found this read very refreshing and eyeopening. After reading "Fraudulent Authority" and studying Scripture, I decided that I will not fee guilty if I choose not to join in with a formal church membership or covenant. My favorite parts were about the woman and man in the Artemis culture in Ephesus and the stories about the Southern Baptist women and what they endured. You just have to read it!
A great presentation of Pastor Burleson's theology of church governance, leadership, and (especially) the biblical rationale against current trends in evangelicalism that has led it to embrace patriarchy and male-only leadership structures in the church and home. One of the author's sermons is included in the book, and provides the reader with a passionate, compelling presentation of the book's main idea.
Authoritarian pastors and elders are becoming the norm in our evangelical churches. As we approach the 500th anniversary of the posting of the 95 Theses on the church door at Wittenburg, the Reformation understanding of the priesthood of the believer is sadly lacking in our churches. It has been replaced by the priesthood of the pastor. Wade Burleson has done an excellent job comparing improper authority with biblical authority. He writes "There is no 'office' of authority in the church of Jesus Christ. Authority is to be experienced in the assembly because of the gifts and ministries of the Holy Spirit obvious through people."
This is in stark contrast to the 9Marks model of ministry that centers authority primarily in the office of the pastor-teacher, who is deemed to "stand in the place of God." Burleson gives detailed analysis of the verses that are misused or mistranslated to support authoritarianism. A great quote from the book "What a tragedy that we have accepted a hierarchy of rulers in the local Church, which ends up limiting the freedom of so many members of the Church. Then, to add insult to injury, the ruled ones have their spirituality measured by their submission to the authority of those rulers instead of measuring the authority of leaders by their submission to the Lord." Burleson denounces the current trend of churches demanding signatures from prospective members agreeing to abide by church covenants that "turn their spiritual formation and maturation over to mere men instead of the Holy Spirit." He list five reasons that one should never sign these covenants.
Personally, I was quite moved by the second half of the book which deals primarily with the issue of women in the church.
There are far too many abusive churches where rulers act as lords over fellow believers. I can testify to this from personal experience at numerous churches in my community. Please read this important book!
